Very recently, I've tried to apply online for Dollar General via the express hiring method but unfortunately, I'm unable to get past the initial stages, this being the log on page. The requirements are your social security number, which is used as an log ID and the first four digits of your birth date ( ex; 0224 )for your pass word. My social security is accepted but my birth date is not. Regardless of what is typed, it will always be flagged as invalid. I've tried different fixes from deleting my web browser's cookies / cache to entering another date, assuming the one I entered previously was wrong. None have worked. Now, I went online to fill out this express hiring because during the holiday seasons I pulled a store walk-in asking for an application but was told they were currently out of them and should try online. At the time, I dismissed it and went on my business . Months later, I finally did as was suggested and obviously, it didn't go well. I went back to the store and again inquired if they had any actual paper applications but was told that they no longer do that, that it was all online. Now that you've made it this far in my lengthy post ( I apologize ), I'm curious on what I can do. Should I sit tight and try the online application another date or should I try and speak to a manager personally? Could perhaps speaking to one individually but considered an application in itself given the odd circumstances? Again, sorry for the long post, just eager to find work.
I have had the same problem and have yet to fill out an application. Let us know if something changes...

How much does everyone else enjoy the fact that DG has decided to cut all part-time (everyone except management) employees down to 22 hours a week, in response to Obamacare? How dafuq do they expect anyone to survive on those hours? Even if your store doesn't have enough employees to use all of the allowed hours for the week, no one will receive any more than those 22 hours.

I have worked for Dollar General for 11 months. I have outlasted two different store managers, multiple LSA's and two Assistant Managers. Around my 6 month mark, I was promoted to third key. 2 months later, I was surprised with another offer of promotion to Asst Manager. Right after being offered this position, my manager fell sick with a tooth infection and was out of work for 3 weeks. I was pulling 60+hr weeks as a third key, with a third key's pay, NOT assistant manager pay. The other new manager that was brought to our store was utterly worthless and hardly helped me. My DM told my manager he was "impressed" with my work. After all this, my manager returned and after some inside theft problems of a cashier, she was given a lame write up about paperwork. She put in her two weeks. That week, my DM came to the store and told me face to face he had put my promotion in the system and it'd be effective the next day. That week, I worked another 54 hr week, with no day off and pulling an open to close one day. (I believe he dangled the promotion in front of me to keep me from walking out.) 2 weeks later, CBL's completed and I've still not gotten a promotion or raise. Just a sarcastic response from my DM about it "not happening over night," and a new manager with something to prove who just keeps reminding me "I'll be gone," if the store isn't perfect when he visits. She won't be held accountable at ALL for HER store?! nope. It's MY job on the line. This is the same woman who within an hour of knowing me talked to me about job codes, in which they said LSA's would remain 909 until they promote, or leave. Her statement was "hah yeah and you'll be 909 until you leave." Within an hour of knowing me, she's already decided I'm not going anywhere in the company? Wth? Nothing about job performance or my work ethic. 11 months spent proving myself a valuable asset and within one hour, I'm suddenly worthless. Go figure.

It's my second day and even the manager is harping on me to hurry up with everything and SHE herself was 10 minutes late to the store so we had to sit around outside. I don't want to get her in trouble so I changed the City to something else. And this is not my true name. I just wanted to say I don't expect to work here any longer. I'm being made to feel like a stupid idiot for having to ASK where thing goes. I would not suggest to work for the Dollar General. THey are completely not what they make themselves out to be. It's a facade on the outside, but when you are inside looking out you'll see what I mean.

DG sucks, period. When remodeling a store they will pay about minimum wage to sweat in the summer sun lifting and unloading. No bonus for the work you did, nothing. They pay pennies and expect miracles. I never offer to work on days I am off, because it's barely worth the gas money to go do it.
I have a BA degree, 1/2 of my Master's completed, 7 years of management, 2 years of teaching along with other skills and I FAILED to meet their assessment standards. REALLY? Some of the people working there look like they may have barely passed High School. But on the other hand, my BA is in Human Services and Counseling and the test questions are based on why people act the way the act, and obviously my perspective is different. I wish everyone else taking the assessment the best of luck.
My mother retired after being in nursing for 30 years and wanted a part time job to keep her moving and busy. I was with her when she took this stupid test and the answers they want are really moronic. Of course if you live in the real world and answer honestly you will fail. They will not hire her because of this test and she is not allowed to take it for a year. I think Dollar General really needs to think over their hiring process.

So I had to sign a piece of paper yesterday because I didn't sell enough one day. I didn't even know that existed. The assistant manager just shrugged it off and said it's just something the company does. I had to sign the paper to show that I was coached, which I really wasn't. I understand suggestive selling, I've worked in retail long enough. But being "coached" after not selling enough in one day? I could see maybe a week, but not one day though. My store is located in a low income area, so when people go in there, they know how much they can spend, and it's usually not a lot. Also, it's a small town (everyone knows each other), so if I'm always trying to "force" items down peoples throats, they will get tired of it. Plus, the amount of customers we get depends on the certain day of the month, the weather, or time of day. The day I was being coached about was a day that it was raining all day long and hardly anyone came into the store, how is that my fault? I work late afternoons, people stop coming in around 8pm (we stay open till 10pm). Another thing, I have been working at DG for a month and I have not taken my CBLs at all. I was told that I had to take them and that was when I first started, but there has never been another word about it. I asked one of the assistant managers and she just kind of blew it off. When I was told about it, it was by the store manager and she actually told me that one of the assistant managers called her and asked if they could take the CBLs for me. Which kind of made me laugh. Lastly, I wish I could get more hours. The other part time associates are getting at least 27 hours, the most I'm getting is 14 hours. Talked to someone about it and the excuse was that they hired someone new and they never showed up, so it threw MY schedule off. Why just mine? Why not the other part timers also? That's been two weeks, it should be fixed by now. Don't get me wrong, I like the job, but no one knows what the other person is doing.

WOW! thats crazy. you would think that the manager would be able to set the price of your raise... I would be like aww yea demote me back down thats not worth it for a .25 raise to have more responsibilities. My manager talked to me about her wanting to make me a third key.... and said the pay is about 8-9/hr. now that makes me wonder. but you can complain and sue DG for not paying you overtime..
So I've worked for Dollar General for over a year now and was promoted to third key back in early June. I was told by my manager that my pay would now be $8.25 an hour. My hours increased by almost twenty and so did my paycheck, so I assumed I had received my raise. Today I checked my most recent paycheck on the store computer and discovered I was only being paid $7.50 an hour. I asked the assistant manager and was told it was the correct amount. I then asked my manager and she told me she had thought it was $8.25 and basically played it off as being confused. I was also under the impression that anyone with the company for a year was allowed a vacation, and yet when I asked I was denied, though May was my one year mark. I'm the youngest in the store and I know they take advantage of me sometimes, complaining if I ask for my scheduled breaks and not paying me for working overtime. Can anyone please tell me if I'm being cheated?
I wish my store had a good manager, we did, but she moved to another store, and one of the assistant managers became the store manager. She's very young (23, I think) and all she wants to do is talk about drama and gossip. She singles me out of everyone else and kind of belittles me. She's friendly with everyone, but me, which I don't understand. I am not allowed to have any breaks when working less than 6 hours unless it's a quick 5 minute smoke break, which I usually take that time to rest and get a much needed drink. The other day I asked for a quick break after running back and forth like a chicken with my head cut off for over 4 hours, the assistant let me go, and when I came walking back in, the store manager starts talking to the assistant manager and says "well, we really don't have to give smoke breaks, because it's not in our policy. Employees that don't smoke, aren't allowed to have any kind of break, which I think is unfair. Plus, I don't pay my employees to go out every hour on the hour." and she kept looking at me when talking about it. I just ignored it, because I don't go out every hour, if I work 5 hours, I go outside one time for 5 minutes. She waited for me to come back in to say that, because she wanted me to hear it. One night she would not "allow" me to have my half hour lunch until I stocked everything that I was given to stock. It wouldn't have been a problem stocking everything, but I was getting a customer at the register every 3 minutes. I worked 6 hours that night and did not get my lunch till an hour before I had to go home, and I did not have any breaks (not even a "smoke break") beforehand. I've worked in so many different retail places before and they always give at least a 15 minute break, no questions asked, but this place cares more about money than their employees.

Well, here's what the DG handbook says..."It is our policy to provide meal and rest breaks during the course of each workday for employees. Unless otherwise required by law, the number and length of breaks will depend on the amount of hours scheduled. Where state law differs from Dollar General policy, Dollar General will follow the specific state law. Employees may receive up to two 15-minute paid rest breaks per day depending on the duration of the employee’s scheduled work hours and the needs of the business. Peak business hours or projects may make it necessary to delay, shorten, or cancel the break." And here's what state law says..."Michigan does not require employers to provide breaks, including lunch breaks, for workers eighteen (18) years old or older. An employer who chooses to provide a meal, lunch, or break period must complete relieve employees of their work duties for the break period to be unpaid."

I'm a store manager starting pay for me was $35,000 plus quarterly and yearly bonus. It is hard to get good employees. I start mine out at $8.40 to try and attract them to stay. Its pretty much go in clean house and build your crew from ground up. After doing that it has made it a lot easier. Its easy to get job here but attracting the top of the line will never happen. Its retail look at Walmart and everywhere else no brain surgeons at any of them. Retail takes what can get.
