Now to top things off, about 3 weeks ago, I went into Dollar General in Freeman, SD. Between my girlfriend and myself we spent $350 and about a week later, I went back to the store, with my original receipt to return 2 twin size Disney comforters, as my kids had found different patterns that they prefered. The new store manager didn't even look at my receipt, just flat out refused to allow me to return the items. She even called the DM and he agreed that I wasn't allowed to make excessive returns. When I went to managers training I don't recall that being taught to us.
They have to accept all returns with receipts, as long as it is within 30 days of purchase, regardless of which store it was bought at. If they refuse, ask to speak to their Divisional VP.

I found this forum by accident.I am recovering from a severe B12 deficiency.Had no idea that it would make me so sick, I can't absorb food or vitamins and over 5 month period I lost 50 lbs, had no energy, cold chills, heart problems, nerve damage, depression, severe anxiety etc. Heard rumors a month before I resigned (they turned around and terminated me). DM took me to receiving room, SHINED LIGHTS in my eyes, asked what drugs was I on, pills, etc. Did not follow procedure for termination, had NO supporting evidence. Biased based on gossip. I'm from California, and these people are unreal. My assistant and my part time key had friends call corporate on me, they kept logs of every time I asked them to come in an hour early during my last month (sorry, I was tired of throwing up and checking customers out). I worked 5:45 am to 3 pm, was the district's training manager.Only got one day off for doctor visits. Never took breaks. Gave my employees all days off requested.I treated them good because I can't stand managers who abuse their position. They knew I was sick but used the weight loss against me. There was no drug test. They never asked for my medical records, which shows that all drug tests were negative.Went from 168 to 118 lbs and scared I was dying. I finally got treated and need B12 and iron injections plus vitamin shots for life.I now weigh 135 thank God. I took my job seriously. No junk on floors, swept, mopped, dusted, only one RT in back room. No overstock. !st place weekly for sales and customer service till the very end. The store looks horrible now, kills me to know that.I didn't deserve that, there are managers who don't work and disrespect their team,I don't believe in that. Going to sue,and wanted to see if anyone else had this happen.Took 4 months to recover, this happened July 26.I'm more hurt than angry, I loved my position and training new managers was something I took pride in.Any questions on policy I can answer for you guys BTW

I know this post is 2 months old, but if anyone else has this problem, you will need to go back into the DG portal and change your password info. Then let the manager of the store you applied for that you cannot access your old email and have already changed that in the portal. All they have to do is re-send it to the current email. Also, sometimes drug screens occasionally won't show up, which puts newly promoted key holder on wait. This is because they send us drug screen forms with incorrect info on it, so it will never show up. In this case, they can apply for the position and then the manager can send out a hiring packet which has a drug screen attached to it. In TN they now only test if they suspect drugs or alcohol while working, this took effect in July of this year.

I know this post is 4 months old, and you have long since moved on. But all states have their own laws, and convicted felons usually do have the worst time getting hired because many corporates do not want to risk hiring someone that they think might rob the store, sell drugs or arrive at work under the influence of drugs. However, I really think that it depends on the charges you were convicted of, if you are a repeat offender or if this was a one time mistake and you have sincere motives to make positive changes in your lifestyle. I do not think it's fair to judge, and I would be one of those managers to give someone a chance. Dollar General has hired people with no criminal background, who end up stealing, and actually, one girl a few months ago had planned a robbery with her boyfriend, she was closing the store and played victim, while he threatened to shoot and they opened the doors and he robbed the store. She confessed the next day.I have also known convicted drug felons who truly did make a change in life, and have never looked back and really, it's just that many people are biased and believe that criminals cannot change. Everyone can change. I hope you found somewhere that shows you can be a productive and trustworthy person so you get your chance to prove yourself to society. Lots of luck to you!

I believe they stopped drug screen tests for promotions or hiring in as a lead sales or above. But it also depends on what state you are in. In West TN, this took effect in July. SO they now only test if they believe they have a reason to. Cashiers are not required to take a test to get hired in.

If you have ever worked for the company in the past and had been terminated. You will show up in the system as ineligible for rehire. This can be lifted, depending on what the situation was, and it is up to their District Manager.

Sorry to inform you, but they (any employer) can cut your pay and/or hours without having any grounds or reason. Since you aren't covered by a contract or union agreement, they only have to pay state minimum wage which is usually $7.25/hour. They don't have to give you any hours either. Unfortunately, that is legal under US Federal labor laws. The only requirement is that they inform you before they cut your pay.

*fingerguns* So I’ve been working at DG for the past couple years and just got fired TODAY. I was a key holder, usually night shift or in the case of recently lafternoon to close of late, but that’s neither here or nor there. Apparently there’s been cash discrepancies on some of the nights i’ve closed. Apparently i’d also been written up twice, which was news to me. Now, I had been talked about twice before about missing money but the conversations amounted to: GM:Where is this money? Me: Don’t know, sorry. GM: You should know as shift manager. Me: I don’t know what to tell you. GM: You need to pay more attention when handling money. Me: Cool, I will. And that was the end of it. I never received retraining or anything like that. The closest thing to retraining I recieved was out of necessity because we had a GM change and the one was a fresh GM hell bent on following company policy to a tee and was horrified by how lax our previous GM had been and how so many of us, management and cashier alike had next to no formal training. However, this training had nothing to do with any kind of disciplinary action. Today I went in for my shift, was told be another key holder after clocking in that LeeAnne wanted to speak with me, I was told that $54 was missing from a till the last time I worked and this was my third write up. I didn’t fight it because honestly, it wasn’t a great job to begin with, I just live in a really small town (not the one listed in my un) and there aren’t a lot of options. I wasn’t outright accused of stealing, but I guess they thought I was, despite there being no proof. Whatever. I’m thinking of writing a complaint to corporate.

Ahh, the big DG, I remember working there, my store manager was awesome, she recognized that I have a good work ethic and made sure I got a 50 cent raise after my 1st 6 months, she was able to talk her DM into it. She didn't expect us to put more effort forth than the company is willing to pay and she used to apologize to us hourly's for not being able to provide more hours and pay. She was an awesome woman whom understood the abuses these corporations like DG perpetrate on their employees and would shield us from them as much as she could. She was a true leader and I missed her terribly when I had to move to a different state

I've worked for this company for over a year now. I was hired on as a cashier and moved up fairly quickly as a FT key holder and became a Ast. Manager. After being a asm I had to transfer to a different store in a different state. I wasn't allowed to keep my position or my wage I was at. It was ok at first. I didnt mind the dollar pay cut or the position. But quickly I learned that stores are ran very differently manager depending. I was working nights mostly at first. Being the part time key holder I'm only allowed to have a register key. Which prior any one who was a manager had every key. But what really is ridiculous is that I would have to borrow someone else's key to close if the SM or ASM went on vacation. But I had to switch to only being able to open execept one day a week because of babysitting problems. Well apparently that was a huge problem. So I recently said that I could work 3 nights a week. Now that I am a cashier is receiving MORE hours than I am! I basically was given an ultimatum either take another pay cut or work at least 3 nights a week because I was just a glorified cashier as the SM called me! It's embarrassing to hear something like that from a SM. She claims it's because of the DM on her but I find that hard to believe because I know that if she wanted she could give whatever raise she wanted to any employee. But to give in to adding two more days and getting slapped in the face with some stuff like that no wonder they can't keep people! It's not fair to people who work hard and prove something it's all about who you know and it's all about favoritism. I just don't get it even being the part time Key I'm still a glorified cashier with working less than 20 hours a week it's unfair and disgusting!!
